My name is Kevin Thompson and I’m a 19-year-old living in Georgia. Last summer I got a traffic ticket and ended up having to pay $838 in traffic fines and fees to DeKalb County and a private probation company. I did everything I could to come up with the money… I did odd jobs for an auto shop and borrowed from my mom, sister, and grandmother. But that wasn’t enough, and I found myself behind bars in a cold and dirty prison cell for five days.

When the ACLU heard about what happened to me, they filed a federal lawsuit challenging debt collection practices that result in poor people being imprisoned. The settlement they reached will help make sure others in my county aren’t jailed just because they can’t afford to pay fines.

I’m glad that the ACLU stood by me — and that it’s standing by many others who are being illegally thrown in prison due to poverty. Please donate to the ACLU to help them as they fight for people who have nowhere else to turn. Donate today and your gift will be doubled thanks to their matching gift campaign.

I know the ACLU was able to take on my case because of the generosity of people like you. And I sincerely thank you for your support.

P.S. Sadly, my story is not unique. Right now, the ACLU is representing a couple in Mississippi, who — like me — could not afford to pay traffic fines and were sent to jail for days. It’s deeply troubling to know that so many others are being punished for being poor. I hope you’ll take action right now to fight this injustice.
